The USA Literary Excellency Award!

It is from the womb of art that criticism was born – Charles Baudelaire

Any authentic work must start an argument between the artist and his audience – Rebecca West.

The US Review of Books connects worldwide Authors and Publishers with Professional Reviewers. It is an independent free running body – and the books and Reviewers are chosen at random order.

Pleased to inform you my Readers and Fans that my Arab Psychology Book has won the prestigious  US Gold Seal of Literary Excellency Award!

My books USA Trafford Publishers had sent me this note – which is very good news on my Arab Management book – Psychology of Arab Management Thinking! – Context and Perspectives. My book had won The Gold Seal of Literary Excellency Award – and was shortlisted for the prestigious Eric Hoffer Award.

The mere fact it had reached this stage – and competed against books from well known world Authors and Writers – and some of them being great Researchers, Professors and great Literary Artists is an achievement in itself – as it was my first Arab Management book! More information at www.myownmajid.com – I am pleased to share with you on our success!

MUSCAT, Oman – In his new book “Psychology of Arab Management Thinking: Arabian Management Series” (published by Trafford Publishing), author and analyst Majid Al Suleimany explores the management styles that he believes helped lead to the events of Arab Spring.

“This is a no-punch-held-back book,” Al Suleimany says. “It critically reviews and assesses with deep soul searching analysis the management styles and approaches of the Arab world, especially in Gulf Cooperation Countries (GCC) vis-à-vis the international companies operating in the international arena.”

USA Golden Seal

An excerpt from “Psychology of Arab Management Thinking”:

“As Arabs work is worshipped in our Religion – so what went wrong here? Especially in Management circles? Why are we behind the rest of the world, despite all our riches, potentials and resources?

This is a no punch held back, no barrels held, no stiff, no frills play – but to be as blunt, frank, open, honest and sincere as far as possible – so the book can be a learning experience and process for this generation – and future to come – especially after the recent Arab Spring uprisings!”

Al Suleimany knows his book fills a critical need. “Little is known of Arab management styles,” he says, “especially as written from the inside by an Arab himself as an experienced professional local HR and management expert, advisor and counselor.”

“It is only by building on existing strengths, and moving forwards on established capabilities that economic maturity can be achieved and rising living standards maintained.”

Writers approach their craft with a variety of motivations. Some search for fame, others for fortune, and still others because spinning words together is one of the few things they are really good at. Some, though, write because what they have to say is burning inside them, and the only release is to share with others what has so inflamed their emotions. Such is the case with the author, whose passion for his people and his culture has driven him to speak out against the problems within Arab management practices so that, as he says, he can one day tell his grandchildren that by writing books he did something about them.

The author approaches his topic as an insider. Having worked extensively in the global business environment and in human resources in particular, both with Arab and international leadership, he has seen firsthand the shortsightedness, prejudice, paranoia, and autocratic tendencies of many Arab managers as well as the unfortunate fact that motivation and morale are frequently higher among Arab employees when someone other than one of their own countrymen is in charge. These observations have gnawed at him, and he questions not only why the situation within the corporate world is like this but also what can be done about it.

As an Omani, the Author offers great insight into his own country’s management issues, but he is quick to point out that many of the observations he makes can be applied to businesses throughout the Arab world. While the subject matter of this book will mainly appeal to readers approaching it from an Arab perspective, students of international business can also learn a lot from the author’s research – Unquote

What The Book Had Said!

As aforementioned, the book is about Arab Management issues and aspects – with personal experiences, exposures and examples of the Author stretching over 35 years experiences in Management and Human Resources – and as a Consultant, Advisor and Expert for over the past 10 years in a number of companies.

Continued – Author’s Note – For a long time now, I have been putting off the idea of writing this book – though it had been on my mind for a long time now. The mere idea of writing this book scared me to bits and pieces – for many valid and pertinent reasons.

I hope you will enjoy the book. I have tried to be as frank, open, forthright, honest, sincere and genuine as I can – as Readers who know me can give credence and credibility to me and will vouch and authenticate my works.

I have not spared myself, so there is just for it to be honest, sincere, genuine and hard hitting – sparing no one. Just No One!

Or Just The Lack of Job Responsibilities, Ethics and Professionalism!

  •  O you who believe! Fear      Allah and be with the true ones (in word and deed) – The Holy Quran – 9:119
  • Life      cannot defeat a Writer who is in love with writing, for life itself is a      Writer’s love until death – Edna Ferber
  • It is      a wastage of energy to be angry with a man who behaves badly, just as it      is to be angry with a car that won’t go – Bertrand      Russell

System Overload – According to Mosby’s Medical Dictionary – System Overload is an inability to cope with messages and expectations from a number of sources within a given time limit. Not to be confused with  also “System Overload” – which is a garage rock song by New Zealand Rock and Roll band The Datsuns. It is their second single off the album Smoke & Mirrors. It was released on both Vinyl and Compact Disk in 2006. It is typical of The Datsuns style. With loud guitar, a lead break and dominant vocals. Electricians describe it when ‘electricity ‘trips down’ (shuts down!)!

With the very start of this column over 12 years ago – I had resolved to speak the truth – even if it will cost me! And cost me it did – but that has not deterred me! My first article was titled More Dangerous and Troubled Waters Ahead! And everything that I had said in it – and others that followed – all came out in truth and in reality!

Mark Twain had said – Always do right. This will gratify some people and astonish the rest! Also in our HadithIf one of you sees something wrong, let him change it with his own hand; if he cannot, then raise voice and speak out against it; if he cannot do even that, then dislike or hate it in your heart, but that is the lowest degree of faith! And on Truth – Say what is true, although it may be bitter and displeasing to people! – by Baihaqi.

The other day I had gone to this Electronic shop to buy a new laptop after my current one went obsolete. There were three Sales People – all expatriates – attending to one European Expatriate. So I sidled to the one salesman on the outer and asked him about the models that I was interested and within my limited budget. Just like I would like to drive the Top Model Range Rover – but I have to consent to staying with my 8 year old banger Camry – because I cannot get the Hire Purchase to buy a new one – even if I can afford it – because of my age. You see I am over 55 – and already put in the list of the ‘living dead’ here! That is how life is now – and how the cookie crumbles!

Anyway, the more friendlier of the lot – guess it was a Filipino – pointed to the direction of where I could see the machines that I was interested in! Maybe he saw me intently looking at the machines – or maybe he thought I would steal or spoil something – then he reluctantly came over! As I had done my research already – I told him to reduce the price – because I needed an up to date Printer also! The good man did!

As I was going out – this nice European lady – from the goodness of her heart – turned to the Salesmen reprimanding them – See you all ignored him – and he bought these things from you! Yet all of you were concentrating with us – ignoring him – and all we are doing here is ‘window shopping’! Let that be a lesson for you in the future! That cooled me down greatly from the ‘milk of humane kindness’ – and made me feel so bad for a considerable while after that!

And this is the point I want to make here! Maybe there are a few bad eggs or fish in the basket – but the trend and approach is ‘controlled apathy and disdain’ against the locals – for no other reason than dislike and ridicule – and contempt! They try hard to hide it – but if you have even an iota of perception – you will not fail to notice it! Especially nowadays! I do not know why these things are happening to us locals now? Maybe we are all made to blame to what is happening to some of them – so the whole lot of us have to be penalised and to be punished in turn!

This is not only in shops – but in the Offices too – including the so-called high profile places – and more even by the locals to their fellow locals – and especially in situations where the expatriates still dominate and control – and the top locals are just window dressings – or ‘figure heads’ only! With all the works and initiatives still being done by the expatriates – and who are ready and willing for the local boss to take points and credit – even if they (expatriates) remain not in the limelight and exposure!

Omani Faces - Toyota

The Omanis Are Strangers In Their Own Land!

Woe to you if you antagonise the Mafia lots – and a few of them have ‘the ears’ of the local bosses. The Local bosses are good Actors, Performers and Impersonators – and if you go to complain and grudge – they pretend to be attentive and caring – whilst all the time working against you! I know I am talking of few misguided cases – but their damages are more harmful and devastating – especially if they come from the so-called high profile places! Red lines have been crossed so many times before – but people just do not care – and still keep pushing!

Omani Men

The Omanis Are Strangers In Their Own Land!

I do not know how long these things will go on – before there is an explosion – like that cinder fire burning underneath and within heatedly and unseen – until it just surfaces – intently and heatedly! I have said so many times in this column – Do not bite the hand that feeds you – because you may end licking the boot that kicks you! They also say – Those that do not learn from history – are apt to repeat the mistakes of the past!

A Simpler Way To Explain Things

Or Why I Like Our Omani Foreign Policies!

!Our Omani Flag HM SpeechOman?s Sultan Qaboos bin Said salutes duHM Sultan Qaboos bin Said 3

The Omani Flag & HM Sultan Qaboos bin Said

Some time back I was stuck in a traffic jam with my then American CEO – and we saw these two Diplomatic Delegations pass in front of us in the traffic queue. So he turned to me and asked – Do you know who is visiting? And teasingly he remarked – I am sure Oman is arranging on the sidelines – quietly and diplomatically – for these two to meet – as they hardly ever talk to each other – even through intermediaries. Next day we found in the papers that his information was correct – and about the delegations. A few months later there was a big coverage press release news of some people arrested of being released – and their journey to their homeland passing through Oman! His casual remark that it was only Oman that can do such miracle acts came to pass and in reality!

When I was working in one of the GCC countries, I had met many locals there who had confided to me that ‘they have a lot of time and respects’ for us in Oman – and how we do conduct our businesses – especially in Foreign Affairs! Dual respects and non intervention in others internal affairs – and remaining International Compliance in Foreign Affairs!

In my job aspects there – I had met many expatriates ex Oman working – and though some of them were receiving very high packages, benefits and perks that they possibly could not get in Oman – I know because I was in HR! One of the most fundamental thing that they missed the most were ‘the Omanis’ – and how hospitable, kind, respecting and esteeming they were to the ‘invited guests’ to the country – and nothing in comparison – even to those near us!

In my first article in my first book – I had written of how I got my first job in one of the GCC countries. As I was being interviewed for the job – the CEO barged in asking some questions to the Recruiting Panel. He saw me in my Omani attire – and was asking if it was about the HR job. When they replied affirmatively – he said Stop the Interview now.

Used to hearing bad news all the time – I imagined the worst – and was starting to get angry. The panel came back to me to say – Congratulations! You got the job. The CEO does not want any further interviewing of you to continue. It seemed that the CEO was visiting Salalah – got lost and he approached a local Bedouin family in the Interior who were just about to have lunch. They insisted for them to have lunch together with them. Only then they took them to the highway – and after a few kilometers showed them the way to Salalah.

It gnawed deeply on the mind of The CEO – what he could do to repay this kind gesture of hospitality and gesture. Luckily for me I was in my Omani attire – and the presentation of self for the interview as such – worked greatly in my favour – and had also quenched the desire of the CEO for ‘pay back’ – and as best as he could. There was a candidate there from another Arab country – who was more qualified and educated than me – and would have most possibly have got the job – if the CEO had not intervened! I was told this by the Panel – and begging me ‘not to tell the CEO!

In one of the lifts in the place – there was this European lady who had dropped her files as she was rushing to the lift! As I was bending to help her – my peers were sarcastically remarking things – when the woman turned facing them – and replying in impleccable Arabic – that it shows in his attire – which looks a bit different! Then she remarked very nice things about Oman. I am not sure if she got what she was looking for in her planned presentation – but it would surprise me if she did not!

In Waterloo Railway Station in UK – I heard my name being called out! I was wondering to myself who is it that knows me here? And then an old work colleague – a British guy – introduced himself. He insisted to take me home for dinner – but I resisted. He too missed Oman very much. He said to me – I went to many countries after Oman – but frankly and honestly – Oman was the best place we had really enjoyed staying with! Our best time was spent there!

When my wife joined me in UK – we went to the countryside in UK. Our banger Morris Minor 1300 got stuck in one of the mud puddles. I was contemplating to call the AAA when this kind farmer came with his tractor and pulled me out! When I was thanking him profusely – he asked me where I came from – after me telling him and his seeing that I was a ‘foreign student’! When I told him from Oman – he refused to let me go till we had some tea and scones in his farm house. He worked in the Oman army before as an Instructor!

I – as an Omani loyal citizen – was very proud of His Majesty visit to Iran. At a time when all the Arab states had boycotted Anwar Sadat – Oman was the few countries that had stood out for talking and diplomacy as the way to solve our worldly problems – especially in relations between countries. From the Renaissance to this very day – and to future – Oman will remain as the beacon and the torch bearer as the best example and illustration of ‘quiet working diplomacy’ – and the correct ethical way of solving world’s problems.

Use of threats, boycotts and the language of wars only makes a bad situation turn even worse – as many examples of history! It is said – If the lessons of history teach us anything it is that nobody learns the lessons that history teach us!

May Allah Protect and Preserve our beloved Nation – and Give His Majesty Long Life and Health – Amin.

Women In The Working Fields!

For Thursday – June 6th 2013.

Between Us Only!

Women in the Working Field!

The other day I was very much touched and impressed – when this young University young girl graduate had confidently called me and wanted to find out some more details and research on a social increasing phenomena topic that I had written long time back on Increasing Alcohol Abuse! As an elderly Omani – I was very much impressed by the kind of searching probing inquisitive questions she had and on her insistence to have basic facts and information and research – and as to ‘how and why – and on what I had based my assertions’ that there was an ‘increase’ in the phenomena?

Women 1 Women 2

Images – Working Women – For Demonstration Purposes Only!

Unfortunately, I did not have the data and the information to back my assertions – but was based more on my ‘gut feelings’ and what I see and hear in the streets mainly – and I am still not ‘that good’ in concocting reference names and figures in just supporting on my assertion! However, if this is the new Omani in our young students now – the future looks very blossoming and rosy indeed – God be praised – Amin!

Omani Worker 4

TImages – Working Women – For Demonstration Purposes Only!

hen just yesterday my son asked if he could send in something that was really eating and burning him intensely. So I agreed. I will reproduce the article below verbatim!

QuoteWomen in the working field, anywhere. Recently I had a great conversation with three of my co-workers, two were men and one lady, the conversation started about any normal working environment; blaming others, however the conversation took a huge U-turn, one of the male co-worker  asked the female co-worker, “if your husband asked you today to quit your job and become a house-wife, will you do it?” she like any Omani women these days said “No, I love my job, I’m good at my job and I want to grow” I totally honor and respect her answer.

No matter what gender you are, you can always rise up the challenges in life and succeed, no matter what nationality or religion, hard work and dedication can take you anywhere, like a great quote “The harder I work, the luckier I get”. So you think that’s the end of the story, well if it was this would be the shortest ever “Between Us only” article ever and my father would ask me never to write again. Like father like son my father is a strong believer in Women working anywhere, why only yesterday he hugged my younger sister and “good-bye” kissed her forehead and said “I’m so proud of you”, you see my younger sister is going to an oil-field somewhere in Oman in which heat is one of the least of their worries, a MALE- Dominate place, where it’s all work no play, under the grouching sun of Oman, to be an electrical engineer.  My father and mother were almost in tears seeing her going to school for the first time, only to assure she will be in this position someday, being dominated in a place where it’s hard to dominate. Now again my parents are in tears, only happy tears

Yet my male co-workers came up with various religious quotes, old Omani sayings and other arguments that suggested that women Must be house wives, be at home to take care of the kids and of course feed the husband, while most of us do agree in these arguments, they must understand that these statements and situations were more suitable and more realistic during those days, when everything was small and simpler, where yes women stayed at home while the husband brings the goods, to teach the children and best of all, being the mother.

women 3 Women 4

Images – Working Women – For Demonstration Purposes Only!

If we still lived in those era’s then yes I totally agree with my male co-workers, but we live in an era that even having a 2000 OMR salary might NOT be enough to live, an era that position, money, the car you drive, where you live is now a goal. Funny how things works and is moving these days, while you still see people having the worst of cars, living in small houses and other things that most of people take for granted, is planning and waiting for the day that he will leave that life to have a better one! We all do, but now is our mothers, our sisters and our daughters who have the same agenda and plans. Oprah Winfrey, Martha Steward and other amazing, strong women had made an example for all them today and for that I salute them.

Long time back someone asked me who’s my idols, my inspirations and people I look up to. A simple question but it takes a lot of time to understand and analysis, I told I have 5 people that I look up and I wish I have just 15% of their dedications, their motivations and their success, my father and my mother are one of them, two of my childhood idols FAB and SAA.

Women 5 DIGITAL CAMERA Women A

The last person is my wife! Weird because my wife is younger than me, didn’t experience life as much as I did, might not went through want I went through, yet she’s without a doubt the most intelligent, most charismatic and most of all the most humble young lady I’ve ever met, the best of these all that those were NOT the reason I’ve chose her to be my life partner. She’s simply strong in my definition, which makes it hard for any man to find, you see having a strong women in life means she will be there for you no matter what, because if you fail, she fails as well. And if you succeed; well she succeeded as well.

Happy Faces (2)

Happy Faces At Work!

So in closing, I’m a strong believer in Women power, if we can do it, she can, if we failed in it, well maybe if we give her a chance, and she might succeed in it. I leave you with a quote from Margaret Thatcher, who we all know was called “The Iron Lady” she quoted “Any woman who understands the problems of running a home will be nearer to understanding the problems of running a country.”

And ooh the female co-worker I was talking about, she joined the marketing department here not knowing a single thing, to basically running the entire marketing department today, a true example. – Take care – Unquote

As a person who was in HR, I know of many real life cases of young Omani girls – University graduates with good degrees and in specialisation – staying at home – whilst the husband – yet poorly paid – is the only bread winner! When I asked one of the girls I fought hard to recruit – What are you doing now – and the engineering graduate too – she said to me weirdly and cutely – bringing babies into the world – and cooking for my good husband!

Frankly, I feel that the youngsters can still really surprise and amaze us – and it is not always the ‘rebelling, rioting, misguided and unconventional things’ that we are used to see – always! But even if they do – in an interview with one ‘rioting Turkish youngster’ – he was being asked why he was protesting the new rules – if he was not the drinking type? And he retorted that ‘it was just the principle and the ethics of the thing’ – and that people should be ‘left to decide their own lives as they best want it run’ – and the business of no one else – even the state for that matter!

Writing is the only profession where no one considers you ridiculous if you earn no money! – Jules Renard

This similar article was written in January 2005 – over 8 years ago! The mere fact that I am writing on the same topic now again – shows nothing much has yet changed that much!

It is commonly said – and repeated over and over againthat the person who really cares and feels for you will tell you the truth – even if you do not like to hear it being told to you! The person who keeps quiet – or goes along with you – even if he knows deep down that what you are doing is wrong and unethical in all accounts – is not your real true friend!

They also say in our Religion that we should not stop saying things which are the truth – even if it will hurt us. There are so many references in the good book and in The Hadith pertaining to this very same topic – and so many cases, examples and references given of our Great Prophet (PBUH) and other examples – rich in history too!

It need to be also said that if Truth was spoken – and people are prepared to hear and listen – and act on them too! – then the world would have been a safer more peaceful place – with more tolerance, co-existence, ‘live and let live’, and patience than now! Whether we want to accept this or not – or go for the ostrich head in the ground approach – it is our own business only – and no one else for that matter! The truth be said – without the necessity of always sugar coating – because the later too does not work either!

I have noted lately that there has been a great support for Arts and Paintings – but with the few exceptions of VIPs books – or books supported by VIPs including opening and launching sessions – the rest of us are still out there in the cold! Especially some of us that write in English as the easier language for us to do! And if you write on topics that people prefer to push under the carpet – or not to hear – then your situation becomes even worse! And that especially when you have compiled your works in books formats – and people can read easily – over and over again!

A few years ago when the poor girl I knew well in my HR Consultancy jobs died – with 9 members of her family in a tragic horrible accident – I was talking with her Manager and was inquiring about her – and why there was a great silence – and nothing coming from her in emails in support and nice comforting words. My emails were going to her – but the IT people there were themselves still in shock to remove her name from the mailing list!

Being The Safe Driver! www.bethesafedriver.com

It is true that many of us read the newspapers – or watch the television – of road accidents stories – but we never imagine that the victim in the tragic accidents – many are avoidable – is someone we know well! We never get involved personally in the stories and get emotionally inclined in touch and feelings! Perhaps if we made the attempts – or tried to do so – things could act out to be different! Perhaps only then road accidents could come down tremendously! I strongly believe in this – with the ever increased accidents and fatalities in the country!

When I self published on my own the Road Safety book – Being The Safe Driver! – Behind The Wheel! – and created the supporting website – www.bethesafedriver.com – I thought things would now be different this time! With exception of some few great companies of the land buying copies for their Board and The Management Team – nothing else went different! It was just the same stories – all over again! Reduce the book price – if I get OMR 2 in each book after costs publishing, air freight from USA and Bookshops commissions at 35% each book!

You would have imagined the Bookshops were the only winners – but even there ;you have to beg, borrow and steal’ to get your books taken in – unless it is for the publicity for the VIPs books – or books launches by VIPs! Poor M – a retired HR – no one knows him – and he has no W! Besides, why support and assist him – when his other books links – especially The Arab Management books that ‘rocked the boat to its very foundations’! So if we support his Road Safety book it would be like directly or indirectly supporting his other books per se!

I remember the famous nursery story of The Red Hen who went around asking others to help in growing seeds until harvest of the corn – but none did! When it baked the cake – and asked – who will eat from my cake? Everyone wanted a piece. I am sorry to say this – after the advices I get of ‘why don’t you translate the book into Arabic? You will get more Readers that way!

When I sent my appeal to them before the book publishing – they just ignored me and looked the other way! Thus my writing the article – Deafening Silence! You can see it here in my website! I should have learnt my lesson – after sending these VIPs my first books – including The Arab Management books specifically – but with the exception of very few expatriates – none even acknowledged even receiving the books – let alone in thanks!

Truthfully, I have never considered the business of writing as a business enterprise – or to make money! There is no money in books – and the returns – if any – are extended, tedious and belated too! But one needs to look things at the greater picture – and look things outside the box! Not everything is money in life! Otherwise today there would have been no great works like War and Peace – or the Shakespearean works! What is the added advantage if one’s works come out in fame – when he is invalid – or as many cases long time dead? Whilst he was alive he was unknown and unacknowledged – and miserable and poor!

I appeal to The Leadership to visit this arena too – and to (re) consider our cases more sympathetically and pragmatically! Especially those of us few that write in English! Even in the few competitions the insistence is works in Arabic – point taken – but communicating in other languages should be welcomed in! That is what and why Oman became great in history! Besides, not many are like yours truly – determined not to be let down – but keep his head up – and to succeed against all odds!

May Allah God Guide and Direct us to the right path and way – Amin.

From Me!

After Compliments;

Another feather in the cap! It makes me feel great and elated! As an Omani – I feel great to see an Omani up there with such a books record!

” I was really amazed that you as an ex HR Person could write such a wonderful book like this on Road Safety (Being The Safe Driver!) – so touching and feeling. I must admit I even feel jealous as a HSE person (British)… I could never dare to attempt to try to write such a book! Congratulations. – From A Reader – UK!
